  See It! Ancient Pompeii Brothel Restored

  An ancient brothel that was considered a jewel of Pompeii,
  Italy has been restored, complete with its original frescoes of erotic figures.

  The Associated Press reports that the brothel, named The Lupanare, which is
  derived from the Latin word “lupa,” or “prostitute,” was opened to the public
  for tours this week after a 12-month restoration that cost $253,000. Pompeii, an
  ancient Roman city, was destroyed in A.D. 79 by the volcanic eruption of Mount
  Vesuvius. Thousands of people died and the city was buried under 20 feet of
  volcanic ash, which actually served to preserve it for 1,600 years. Now it’s a
  field day for archaeologists who have a goldmine of information on what life was
  like in this ancient world.

  The two-story brothel, which was centrally located near the city’s forum and
  market, has 10 rooms with five on each floor and a latrine. Each of the ground
  floor rooms has a fresco with a different sex scene painted over the door, which
  possibly suggests the prostitute’s specialty. The second floor was used by
  higher-ranking clientele and offered stone beds that were covered in mattresses.
  Each room had names engraved on the walls, which presumably are the names of the
  prostitutes and their clients.

  A tomb raider in Rome, Italy has made a stunning artistic find–one
  that some think could be the oldest in Western civilization.

  “The legend that Pompeii was a lascivious city is true–and not true,” Pietro
  Giovanni Guzzo, the site’s top archaeological official, told AP. “There was
  ample opportunity for sexual relations, but the prostitute in the technical
  sense was confined to one place.” The prostitutes were slaves of Greek or
  foreign origin. The men who frequented the brothel were wealthy merchants in
  Pompeii and visiting sailors.
