  • A new month-man, it came quickly!
    Soon, we will see this:

Winter is my least favorite season.  I would be happy if we only had it for Xmas, then it could effing disappear for the rest of the season!

When I Said I Wanted to Be Your Dog
    Jens Lekman
    2004

Swedish songwriter-rocker Jens Lekman has seen a suitably
ramshackle rise to fame, with his clear, clever, and heartfelt lyrics and
deceptively lackadaisical but pitch-perfect singing. His songs charm and win
through his guileless, earnest, self-effacing romantic persona, in a manner
reminiscent of Jonathan Richman, Morrissey, and/or Stephen Merritt of the
Magnetic Fields. Although Lekman is a native Swedish speaker, he sings in an
English that is easier to understand than ours. What makes Lekman a hit with the
Internet crowd is the stand-alone nature of his songs. The listener immediately
feels comfortable with the starting chords of When I Said I Wanted to Be Your
    Dog
as each song is notable on its own, yet the album melds together as a
grand song-cycle of romantic failure, struggle, and eternal optimism.

Culled from songs created as MySpace cuts, and including singles or live
tunes played from 2000 to 2004, the album employs sounds from a brightly tacky
synthesizer backing and orchestra samples to what appears to be a bootleg
recording from the drunken Swedish cast party of Avenue Q. “We’re
drinking cheap wine to bossa nova / You’re a supernova in disguise,” goes a
typical lyric, from “Happy Birthday, Dear Friend Lisa,” about the happy period
of first getting to know a special woman. This same woman subsequently wrecks
Lekman’s life as the songs play out. In “Do You Remember the Riots?” he sings a
moving a capella tale of losing the respect of his girlfriend at a public
demonstration. In another song, he sadly offers to sing at her wedding to
another man. Lekman comes off as a heroically misguided lad who continually
risks his life and sanity to keep the interest of some obviously troubled and
undoubtedly lovely young Swedish lass. In classic codependent fashion he pr!
oclaims, “It’s so beautiful to be guided,” as the trumpets flare in an eruption
of 1970s-tinged cheer. Later in the album, Lekman’s love life becomes even more
complicated. In “Psychogirl,” an affair with a girl named Julie starts as a
snowstorm-bound one night stand and ends with her stalking him.

    In
addition to Lekman and his mandolins, samples, and guitars are some top-notch
accompanists. The ex-girlfriend character with the lovely voice on “If You Ever
Need a Stranger (to Sing at Your Wedding)” and a brilliantly mournful male
harmonizer on “Julie” stand out. This simple, hilarious, and poignant record is
one that many musicians wish they were able to make. Instead of looking to a
deep or musically complex sound, it’s albums like this one, with its heavily
Bacharach-influenced material, that the world needs now. Does Lekman ever find
that love he’s been looking for? Suffice it to say that you will be riveted to
the songs as if you were tuning in to an old radio drama. This is not just
hilarious song craft; this is art, this is life. This is Jens Lekman.

  • hey, nice profile pic!

  • Is that your snow photo? Do you really get snow like that? I bet it does get old after a while, especially when it’s not pretty as freshly fallen snow.

  • In my personal rule book, ranting and grieving should only be done privately and/or silently.  Everyone is different.

  • I think it’s important that stress is kept seperate from emotion.  Stress can be hard to avoid when lots of big things happen all at the same time… Physical stress is sometimes impossible to avoid… but drains mental energy anyway… Being anxious or angry or other reactions to the stress are separate and have to be dealt with through different tactics I think.  I try to use the stress as creative energy – just channel whatever tension I have through the paintbrush.  I’m using a lot of red lately because I splurged on a really good pigment and it’s kind of my new toy.  Here, you only see the paintings I’ve finished.  What you don’t see is that I have about 5 canvases around me in a circle in the studio and usually each one is a very very different painting – usually different colors AND different styles.  I paint them all in the same session (stressed or not)- turning around to face whichever one seems to need the color that happens to be on my brush.

  • did you get my message. :p

  • Oh thank you my friend :) Very very sweet of you :) I don’t much care for the cold myself which is why I sit with a hair drier on me going all the time LOL  Do take good care of you, xoxo Tynee

  • ryc:  LOL.  i’ve noticed.

  • RYC:  Kukamonga sassafrass. (?)  Is this a type of tea?  I use giger and lemon to make tea for sore throats.  It really does help.  I love hearing form you too.  And yes, the icicles hanging from the trees are gorgeous!  Ice mists in the grey dawn are beautiful too.

    HUGS!!!

  • I’m glad you stopped by.  Some days are warmer than others…ha.  Today was silly.

Me either I don’ t like much the dark , cold  and short days of winter . I prefer the light of siummer .

    Love      Michel

  • I also hate winter, esp. since it’s so long out here. It’s not just the cold but the short days and long nights that get to me. :spinning:

  • Love the reaction game (.28)  My employee lost several minutes of productivity from me just now.

Regarding the blurb on “Its the Personal Relationship That Matters”.  Although it emphasized spending quality time with your mate, that should go also for spending quality time with another individual.  I don’t know about you, but I find it very difficult to get another person to spend quality one-on-one time together.  It’s always with groups.  I love to go out for dinner and just talk with a friend, but most people shy away from that.  I think most people are afraid of spending quality one-on-one time because that tends to being intimate.  And I’m not talking about male-female intimacies.  Few people will tell you what they’re going through or what’s on their mind.  Of course, few people will listen also.  But for those of us who want to listen, it’s difficult to find someone willing to have a meaningful dialog.

  • Hope you are having agreat day today…………any plans for the weekend….just around the corner………………:fun::sunny::heartbeat:

  • we have so much in common
