  • Looking for love…eventually

Bad things do happen to good people-
our response is what is important

5 not so great things about me

    1.  Overweight
    2.  Unemployed
    3.   Depression
    4.  Smoker
    5.  ?!

    5 great things about me

    1.  Love to write
    2.  Good sense of humor
    3.  Loving and affectionate
    4.  Creative
    5.  Intelligent

    So that’s that!

    Drum
    Hugo Largo

    1988

Emerging during the tail end of an era dominated by hair metal
and New Wave, Hugo Largo was an New York City art band with two basses, one
violin, an intense female singer named Mimi Goese, and no (or almost no) drums.
Calling their debut album Drum was yet another ironic move on the part of
a band with not a single member named Hugo. What Hugo Largo did have was a
bewitching brew of a sound: minimalist but not pretentious, gorgeous without
being too pretty, its innate gloom tempered by a sense of comforting melodic
tradition. The operatically trained Goese sings like a beautiful banshee
and-with no drums or guitars to get in the way-the basses etch out only the most
skeletal of structures for her expansive voice to inhabit. Michael Stipe was a
supporter of the band and produced the album (he also lent some guest vocals),
and fans of early R.E.M will recognize in Hugo a similarly dreamlike sound.

“Grow Wild” features an ominous, pick-strummed bass line, with Goese’s
layered vocals overlapping back on themselves like the onset of an auditory
hallucination, a midsong entrance of the violin causes spinal shivers. The
opening of “Eskimo Song” continues the vibe of hushed mystery. Goese sings in a
low whisper with a gently repeating bass chord urging her on. As the electric
violin generates force behind her, her voice pierces the heaven with high notes
like chimes countering the rich, low bass. It’s simple, traditionally melodic,
yet powerful enough to stop time cold.

“Second Skin” is the standout in
a short but filler-free little masterwork. The song is a coiled ball of
alternating quiet-loud dynamics, with brooding bass chords underscoring Goese’s
soft singing for the verse. As the music seethes outward into the blistering
chorus with the sudden last-minute arrival of drums, Goese’s voice expands and
solidifies into a force of nature: “I’m wearing a / Second skin” goes the song’s
refrain, encompassing the listener in a sheath of intensity. The emotional
catharsis this song manages to wreak in just over three minutes is astonishing.
That this band wasn’t more recognized in its lifetime is a tragedy. “Second
Skin” alone would have earned itself a coveted spot on every breakup mix tape of
its era had it reached the bedrooms of the alienated youth that would soon
discover Mazzy Star. But it’s never too late-Drum is devastating in any
    decade.

  • RYC—since worthy of the Nobel prize in literature is six words too many, maybe Coltrane will do:sunny:  The first album i ever BOUGHT was The Sound of Music soundtrack:eek: [and being a kid, i didn't realise that it was the Mary Martin version instead of the Julie Andrews one].  So MY reference of “My Favourite Things” was the Broadway showtune version…can you imagine the CULTURE SHOCK when i heard John Coltrane do it for the first time:wha:

So OBVIOUSLY you’re gonna have to completely step out of the box in order to read Jew Girl…that link may or may not take you to my ever temperamental bulletin board where you’ll see a lot of your fellow Xangans commenting on it…as well as “haters” who never read it…unlike Fox “news” i cover all angles:lol:

    ME vs YU—

5 not so great things about me

    1.  Overweight—FINALLY got up to what i SHOULD weigh, and all of it went to my stomach and a roll of fat under my chin [like Elvis' mamma]…my ASS is as flat as my stomach shoud be
    2.  Unemployed—Usually UNDERemployed…gotta get that Sambo-shuffle down
    3.   Depression—IF you’re talking about MY bank account…dustbowing it
    4.  Smoker—BEEN quiting for 35 years…DEFINITELY gonna lick it this weekend
    5.  ?!—NOT enough lysergic in my diet  EVERY time i see all these kids on the news running to rehab because they got an LSD “problem” i Seinfeld it—WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE???—and where the fuck do they live

ANYONE who has a link to online lysergic drop me a link…fuck the premadol, oxycontin and what-have-yous

  • I think your good list is awesome. You are truly a wonderful person. Those pumpkin pictures were hilarious!!
have a great rest of the week!!

  • Your lists are so unequal its a win for the good hands down!  Love the pumpkin pics, lol, they’re great!

  • :heartbeat:

Probably without even giving it a second thought, you wrote “love” and and then “loving and affectionate” again in separate categories.

That says it all. It’s pretty much all you are about. Laurie - love. I know it. I see it. I can almost touch and feel it in the beauty of your words. Everything you write carries the sweet scent of your love and conveys acceptance and empowerment through thoughtful sensitive, sometimes light hearted, sometimes deep and myesterious wisdom.

Your love is what renders all the “not so greats” completely irrelevant. How can we, how could anyone, how could I – not love you too?

  • I love the pumpkins pictures  So funny

Have a nice day Laurie

  • I love the pumpkin pics!  Those are too cute!  I am carve-challenged.  My pumpkins are the same  year after year.  Not for lack of imagination, but it just doesn’t quite make it from my thought process to my fingers to do the carving.  Let’s just say coordination isn’t a strong suit for me!

The “5 bad things??”  Can’t even imagine anything bad about you!  Nothin’ but good, sweetie!

  • I love the pumpkin pics!

  • those pictures are great…………….:heartbeat::sunny:….just to let you know we all love you……….so smiling for that………

  • hey sweetie, loe the pumpkin pics,, and everyoe is right ,, the good so outweigh the petty shit,, thanks for the birthday wishes!!!!!!! ilu

  • that’s the fastest survey i’ve ever seen

  • I love the Halloween pics!! They really livened up my day!! I am sorry you are depressed–me too but hey I just deal with it with alot of humor–chk out my site and you will see why!!!! I luv ya lots and appreciate all you do!!! See now there is that lovely smile you have!!!!

    Take care

    ~May

  • I got those pumpkin pictures too and saved them.  Now here is something, but you only get one answer.

1 Bad thing about me.  I am overweight

    1. good thing about me.  I like myself.

  • liked the Jack o Lanterns

and wanted to get you to read a poem I posted……………..

  • My house must look different colors in different browsers. Someone else said it looked pink. Judi

  • I think it is a karmic law. Good things happen to bad people too….

I be lookin’ for love eventually too. I just keep loving everyone all the time. At least I get to love.

    The pumpkins are wonderful.
ryc – thanks for the reminder. I went outside and took one.

  • You seem to know yourself pretty well and that is a gift.  :)

Also, the pumpkin heads rocked! :goodjob:

  • Laurie,
I think we have a LOT in common. As for your message, I hear ya and am right there with you ( except for the dial up).

  • I am birtday-ed out! LOL! Time for a regular day!

    Night!

  • Fun pumpkins..so creative.

    Thanks for sharing

    Christy

  • I love the bottom and flashing pumpkins.

Problems are liveable with if you are appreciated, and that appreciation is shown warmly and preferably with love. I think you have that. Otherwise life can be cold and lonely and seem pointless.

  • CRAZY PHOTOS LOL

    ~*~STOPPING BY TO SAY HELLO~*~

    LOVE YA

  • I am glad the great things about you are in balance with the not so great things , Laurie .

You write in your xanga message ”   hope all is well with you! ” . But unfortunatly all is not well for me and I wonder if you read my latest blog to the end .. Sometimes a comment is comforting .

    Love        Michel

  • :sunny:Lovely Blog!!!:sunny: Fun Pumpkin Pictures~!!!:giggle::)

It was a “privilege” to have the pleasure of you stopping by~!!!

    Here’s to a fun & fantastic Friday~!!!~(((Hugs!!!))):sunny::):sunny:

  • The 5 good things far outweigh the 5 bad!

We don’t see many pumpkins here, I’m quite glad of that now!

  • hop you are doing ok!!

  • It seems to me that none of the five bad things about you, with perhaps the exception of depression, have anything to do with detracting from your five good things.  And I would be much more drawn to a person with those five good traits rather than those five bad habits.

Love the pictures – especially the fanny butt.

Regarding the flasher – that reminds me.  Did you ever hear about the flasher who thought about retiring?  Then he decided not to, as he thought he would stick it out for one more year.

  • I’ve never been a huge fan of Art Bands. They usually have a LOT of talent, and the music is incredible, but too often they take “self expression” and just make it weird…and if it isn’t weird, then they claim that your only “selling yourself”.

    Hehe…Just my opinion. Hope things are going wonderfully for you! {{{HUGZ}}}

  • thanks for sending me messages to my xanga blog..havne’t posted anythinng here for a long time I think..
    Helloween time is arriving!!hehe….

    love from China!!
    Peace

  • Was WONDERING what that link was to:lol:

Looking more for the dudes who run the pharmaceutical viagra online shopping places…did you see on the news that one of those companies GUARANTEES re-delivery if the postal inspectors nab you stuff:eek: and there’s usually no prescription needs:wha:

  • Hey! I was wondering where bunnikins went! LOL… Having a better day?
